About ReticulOS

6 questions
What is ReticulOS?

A desktop app for Linux and Windows that keeps what you save in one place. Save notes, links, pictures, PDFs and recordings from any app into collections, find them again by describing them, and ask Ret, the built-in AI, about them. Answers show the notes they came from.

Who is ReticulOS for?

Anyone whose work is spread across tabs, files, chats and forms, and who wants to find the right note again without digging for it. The blog has guides for research, job applications, developers and daily planning.

What does the name mean?

It comes from reticulum, Latin for a small net. Your collections are regions of the net and each saved item is a knot where a capture lands. It has nothing to do with the medical terms that share the prefix, or with the Reticulum Network Stack, the mesh-networking project. Inside ReticulOS, Reticulum is the name of the full workspace window.

Who makes ReticulOS?

One independent developer. ReticulOS has been in beta since March 2026. The about page has the key facts and the timeline.

Is ReticulOS open source?

No. ReticulOS is proprietary software, and the free plan is the whole app with no time limit. Versions before 0.10 were released under the AGPL.

How is it different from a clipboard manager?

A clipboard manager keeps a history of everything you copied. ReticulOS keeps what you choose to save in named collections, lets you edit it as rich notes, and answers questions about it with sources. See the comparison.

Getting it

5 questions
How do I get ReticulOS?

Download it free for Linux or Windows. It's in beta: the beta notice sets out what it includes today and what arrives with the official release.

What does the beta include?

Every feature that's finished today, on Linux and Windows. Cloud backup, the browser extension, transcripts of recordings and signed Windows installers arrive with the official release, and Pro, Student and Founder Edition members get them on launch day at no extra cost. The beta notice has the details.

Which computers does it run on?

Linux (Debian and Ubuntu, as a .deb package) and Windows 64-bit. Linux gets new features first. Mac is coming next.

Does it work on Wayland?

Yes, with one extra step for the shortcuts. Global shortcuts are fully supported on X11. On Wayland the desktop controls global shortcuts, so you add them yourself, for example in GNOME's Settings → Keyboard → Custom Shortcuts. Troubleshooting has the exact commands.

Is ReticulOS free?

Yes. The free plan is the whole notes app with no time limit, plus 25 Ret answers a month. Pro is $20 monthly or $200 yearly and adds Ret Agent (soon, Linux first), form filling, your own choice of AI, PDFs, recordings and video searchable to the page or the minute, and encrypted cloud backup from the official release. The first time you sign in you get 14 days of Pro free, with no card. Students get Pro at half price with a school email. The Founder Edition is one payment of $129 for the first 100 backers and includes everything Pro will have. See pricing.

Privacy & data

5 questions
Where is my data stored?

On your computer, in a database that's encrypted at rest. The key is protected by your operating system's keyring. Details are in Data & Storage.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Saving, organising, editing and exporting all happen on your computer, and search by meaning works offline after a one-time download of its model. Ret's answers need a connection to the AI service you use.

Does ReticulOS see or sell my notes?

No. Your notes stay on your computer, and the app has no analytics or tracking. When you ask Ret something, your question and the notes needed to answer it go to the AI that writes the answer: with Ret AI, through ReticulOS's service to Google's Gemini API, and the service keeps counts of your use, not what was in it; with your ChatGPT plan, to OpenAI. See the privacy policy.

Are my notes used to train AI?

No. ReticulOS doesn't collect your notes, so there is nothing to train on: they stay in an encrypted database on your computer. When you ask Ret something, only the notes needed for that answer go to the AI that writes it. Ret AI uses Google's paid Gemini API, under which Google doesn't use prompts or responses to improve its products. With your ChatGPT plan, OpenAI's terms for your plan apply.

Can I export my data?

Yes, any time: as a folder of Markdown files (with front matter and images as real files) or as a single JSON file that keeps everything.

AI & features

7 questions
What is Ret?

The AI built into the widget. Press Ctrl+Shift+Space and ask about one collection or all of them. Ret finds the most relevant notes, writes an answer, and numbers each source so you can open the exact note it came from.

Can ChatGPT, Claude or Cursor use my notes?

Claude, Cursor and other apps that support MCP can search your notes today, for free. Anything they want to add or change needs your approval and can be undone. With Pro you can also sign in with ChatGPT, so Ret answers from the ChatGPT plan you already pay for.

Can it fill in forms for me?

Yes, with Pro. Point it at a form on screen and each field gets an answer from your notes, with its source, ready to copy. If it can't find something, it says so instead of guessing, and it never types into the page itself. A browser extension that fills web forms directly, after you review each value, arrives with the official release.

How do I save something from another app?

Select it and press Ctrl+Shift+=. It lands in the collection you're in. You can also paste or type into the widget, and show or hide the widget with Ctrl+Shift+\. See Capturing.

What is Reticulum?

The full workspace: your collections as a grid, a list or a free canvas, with search, pinning, colours and an editor for headings, tables, to-dos and more. See Reticulum.

What is the day book?

A page for each day, with tags, a week strip, unfinished to-dos carried forward to today, and a one-click summary of the day. See Schedules.

Is there sync between computers?

Not yet. Encrypted cloud backup, which you can restore on any computer with your recovery key, arrives for Pro, Student and the Founder Edition with the official release. Live sync, where every change appears on all your computers as it happens, is coming.
